Stage 3 Breast Cancer
Stage 3 breast cancer is worse than stage 2. The cancer cell is invasive, but this is not being considered as metastasis. In this phase, cancer has extended and invades to lymph nodes underarm and under collar bones. However, the tumor has not spread to distant organ of the body, and the size is quite big. Although the cell is invasive, the survival rate is still available; even there are survival women from this stage. The information about this stage will be explained more below
Types of stage 3 breast cancer
Stage 3 breast cancer is divided into 3, IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC. The characteristics of stage IIIA are size of tumor is bigger than 5 cm, cancer has invaded to 1 or 3 place of lymph nodes or breast bone (it can be known by the biopsy of sentinel lymph nodes). Other conditions, the tumor size is more than 5 cm and there is a cluster of breast cancer cells from 0, 2 – 2 mm in lymph nodes. There is no tumor but cancer cells are exist in lymph nodes around breast bones (it can be discovered by physical examination or imaging test). While stage IIIB is signed by breast cancer cell which invade lymph nodes near breastbones or invade in up to 9 axillary lymph nodes and there is a case of spreading tumor to chest wall or breast skin that make swell or carbuncle.
The tumor can be in any size. Doctor can consider that breast cancer is in IIIC stage if; cancer cells are found in several place of lymph nodes, for example in breast, under collarbone and on the collarbone. The tumor can be in any size, but exist just in the breast tissue. Don’t lose hope if you get stage 3 breast cancer because there is several treatment to do. Commonly the treatment for this phase is depending on the condition of patient, age and hormone condition. Doctor will do some test to check your health condition and what treatment fit patient best.
Commonly, Stage 3 breast cancer can be treated by using two treatments such as, mastectomy and radiation. Mastectomy is surgery to remove whole breast, it usually done when big tumor reach chest wall. Radiation therapy use high energy of ray to extinguish cancer cells. Radiation can be used by external and internal. External radiation is like an X-Ray, but the light is pointed in the affected part of the body only. The light will be focused on the organ for 3 minutes and this therapy usually done five days a week during five or six weeks. While internal radiation is the insertion of radioactive liquid via catheter, needles or wire to kill cancer cells.
The survival rates from breast cancer IIIA is 67%, 41% for IIIB, and 49% for IIIC. The rates can be higher with strong motivation for recovery of patient and support from people around patient. Patient will be suggested to avoid stress and high fat food, so Stage 3 breast cancer hope for recovery is quite high.
