Breast Cancer Survival rate is a prediction of breast cancer patient’s life in the future. For example, 5 years survival rate means the percentage of breast cancer patient’s life after being diagnosed is 5 years at least. However, that does not mean the remain age of breast cancer patient is 5 years after diagnosed, because there are many patients who survives for more than 5 years even 10 years. It depends on the condition of patients. Thus, do not worry if you are diagnosed of breast cancer, because there is a hope to live even in any stages of this disease.
Breast Cancer Survival Rate by Stages
Before knowing about breast cancer survival rates, it’s better for us to recognize the symptoms of breast cancer stage 0-4. Breast cancer stage 0 is marked by no tumor in the local lymph nodes and the carcinoma is still in its place, haven’t spread to other organs. Stage 1 is when the tumor sized 0-2 cm. Stage IIA is considered if the tumor sized 2-5 cm, it may spread to lymph nodes or haven’t spread. Stage IIB has tumor with more than 5 cm sized or the cluster of cancer cells are found. Stage III commonly marked is the size of tumor 5 cm or more and spread to several spot of lymph nodes, while stage 4 is when the cancer cells has been happening metastasis to distant organ of the body.
There are many researches for breast cancer survival rates. American Cancer Society (ACS) reported in 2011-2012 that by stage, 5 years survival rates of cancer patient is 98% for localized means breast cancer stage 0-2, for regional (stage 3) is 84% and 23% for metastatic cancer (stage 4). In 2014 National Cancer Institute researched that the 5 years survival rate for breast cancer stage 0-1 is 100%, Stage II is increased to 90%, Stage III is 70%, and finally Stage IV is 20%. Those review shows that year by year, the survival rate for breast cancer is getting higher, except for stage 4 which is lower 1 percent than before. However, survival depends on condition of the patients.
Overall, 5 years breast cancer survival rates are getting higher from year to year. It can be because of the developing research and technology of treating this disease. This survival rate depends on several conditions of patients like demeanor and motivation, hormone receptors on cancer cells, whether it is negative or positive, types of organ which is infected by cancer cells, general health and age. Good news comes from the research of University of Maryland Medical Center. It tells that many women with breast cancer can live longer than the expectations. The number of mortality of breast cancer is getting low.
Cancer mostly attack female in old age, but it does not mean the younger age can not suffer this. It depends on a history of family, genetic conditions and lifestyle. Data above is a research in common situation, so survival rates for each patient are different. Long time survivor is influenced by healthy condition and physically active at the time of diagnosis. Those things can influence breast cancer survival rate.
