Breast cancer Chemotherapy ,or people call it “chemo”, is the using of medical substance to kill cancer cells which are spread to distant organ. This medical substance can be inserted through intravena infusion, injection or as form of pills or liquid. Chemo is a systemic therapy, in the other words, it influenced other body because it is injected and spread through bloodstream. Chemotherapy is used to treat:early-stage invasive breast cancer, to clean remnants cancer cells after surgery, to diminish the peril of the coming back of cancer and advanced-stage breast cancer and to destroy or damage the cancer cells as much as possible. Main medicine for chemo are; Fluorouracil, Epirubicin (5FU), Methotrexate, Mitozantrone, Mitomycin, Doxorubicin, Docetaxel (Taxotere), Gemcitabine (Gemzar), and Cyclophosphamide.
Types of Breast Cancer Chemotherapy
There are some situations when breast cancer chemotherapy will be taken, before surgery (Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy) and After Surgery (Adjuvant Chemotherapy). Chemotherapy before surgery have purpose to lessen big size cancer cells so that it small enough to be removed, for example just the cancer cells which is removed rather than a whole breast (mastectomy). Patients need Radiotherapy or other treatments such as Hormone Therapy after the surgery. The benefit of this chemo is doctor can see the reaction of cancer when chemo is done. For example, if the tumor is not decreased, another drug will be used.
After Surgery Chemotherapy is breast cancer chemotherapy. This is given to reduce coming back of breast cancer cells. This is used commonly for type of cancer which has not spread yet. This kind of Chemo may be recommended for patient with high stage of breast cancer (stage 3), if patient lymph nodes contain breast cancer cells, patient have big initial cancer in breast and cancer cell have no reaction to hormone therapy.
Besides its benefit, breast cancer chemotherapy has some side effects for its patient. The effects are early menopause, because chemo drugs stimulate ovaries of making estrogen, because estrogen can stimulate cancer to grow. Another effects hair loss and nail change, low blood cells counts, nausea and vomiting, even loss or increase appetite. Feeling unwell or tired is another side effect of chemo. Some women do not feel as fit as before, after accepting chemo. There is often a remnants feeling of body pain or achiness and a gentle loss of physical functioning. These may be very subtle changes that are only revealed by closely questioning women who have undergone chemo.
Side effect it’s treatment seems fear and uncomfortable patients. However, do not be afraid because that effect will be disappears as patient stop chemotherapy. Some of women find that their ovaries begin to work after chemotherapy; it depends on patient age and medicine given during chemo. However, if the periods still stop 1 year after stop chemo, patient should go to the doctor. Some patients also find their hair grow again after chemo. The important thing is always consult what you feel to your doctor. Doctor will anticipate for something happen in the future. In additional, have regular exercise, eat healthy food and self-motivation to recover. Those can lessen side effect of breast cancer chemotherapy.
